Martial Artists of Aikido/ 合気道家

Two type of photos: Gozo Shioda and Morihei Ueshiba are the masters of martial artists in the 20th century in Japan. They are a contrasting pair and these natures are interesting. 

Thinking and Relax
Gozo Shioda is Rational. He focuses on the the lens and has fighting stance: face to face. He thinks the answer is always in one’s mind. On the other hand, Morihei Ueshiba is unconscious. He stares abstractedly at the photographer: natural or relax. Although Morihei Ueshiba is barrier-free and entrust interpretation to the outside, he is throughly guarded. 

Framed and Unframed
Gozo Shioda is framed because he is rational and thinks stop by step. Morihei Ueshiba is unframed because he does not believe in word. Therefore, we cannot catch his mind.

Insecurity and Stability
The photos of Gozo Shioda in later life make the audience have a feeling of insecurity. The photos of Morihei Ueshiba makes the audience have a feeling of stability. That is, the audience feel insecurities because Gozo Shioda sensei have a feeling of Insecurity. The photos of Gozo Shioda has the ambivalence of impulse and brake. On the other hand, Ueshiba Sensei has stability. So, we feel stabilities.

Diversity and Sophistication 
Gozo Shioda sifts out. Therefore, He is more sophisticated than anyone. On the other hand, Morihei Ueshiba accepts anything. Therefore, His caliber is higher than anyone: diversity. These founders has direct effect on each organization.

不世出の達人といわれた塩田剛三先生の肖像写真です

二人の肖像写真は対照的で興味深いと思います

〈理性と自然体〉

まず塩田先生はレンズの一点をみつめて構えています
理性的な眼で、撮影者との対峙を感じます

　一方で植芝先生はレンズを眺めていていますが、構えてはいません

撮影者との境界も感じさせません
頭ではなく身体で感じとっています

自然体ですが、その割に隙が全く感じられません

 

〈枠〉

塩田先生は理性という枠の中で生きているので論理的です、だからどの写真を見ても塩田剛三という名前にうまく収まっていて、この人の肖像写真は塩田剛三としてのまとまりがいいんです

　一方、植芝先生の場合、植芝盛平という名前にすら収まりきっていません
植芝盛平という人は言葉を信じていないので、段階的にものを考えないし、枠がない　　　　　
だから宇宙的です、それでどんなに写真をみても心をとらえ切れないんですね

 

〈焦燥と安定〉

また晩年の塩田先生の写真というものはどれも見る人を不安にさせるんですが

植芝先生にはそれがありません

 

塩田先生の写真は衝動と抑制の相反がバランスよく効いていますが

一方で無自覚に人を煽るところがあるんです

　もっと言うと、こちらが揺れるということは写真の向こう側も揺れているわけで

塩田先生の気持ちはこのショットがきられた瞬間に揺れているわけです

けれども植芝先生にはそれが全くないんですね

 

〈洗練と多様性〉

二人の眼をみると、塩田剛三という人には選別を

植芝盛平という人には受容を感じませんか

　塩田先生は答えは自分のなかにあると考えています、つまりは理性的です

“何よりも選別する, それ故に誰よりも洗練されている”

　というのが塩田剛三という人間だと思います

 

　一方で植芝盛平という人はこだわりがなく、答えを何かにゆだねています

“なんでも呑み込み, それゆえ誰よりも器が大きい”

 

　つまり非常な多様性を感じます

そしてこの二人の合気道家の資質の違いが

今日の合気会と養神館という

それぞれの組織の特徴に大きく影響を与えているのではないでしょうか
